Thanks for stopping by! There’s a lot to see at the KY Coal Museum and Portal 31 Exhibition Coal Mine, and we are excited to help you plan your visit! Hours and admission prices are listed in the box at the left, and the additional information below will help you know what to expect when you arrive.

Where to Start

If you’ve never been to the KY Coal Museum or Portal 31, you are in for a real treat! The museum is located in Benham, a former coal camp in Harlan County. A few miles north in Lynch is Portal 31, Kentucky’s first exhibition coal mine.

While you are in town, you may want to consider some of the other exciting attractions and quality lodging that Harlan County has to offer. You could easily plan a weeklong vacation centered around at least one day at the museum! Make sure that you review our upcoming events and activities to decide the best time to come.

Spend the Night

Spend the night before or after your travels at the gorgeous Benham School House Inn located right across the street from the KY Coal Museum. For Your Convenience

Below are some of the amenities at the KY Coal Museum. Remember, our Guest Services Team is ready to assist you with any needs you may have during your visit. The Guest Services Information Center is located near the building’s main entrance.

Strollers & Wheelchairs

Guest Services offers both strollers and wheelchairs for the convenience of all visitors on a first-come, first-served basis.


Restrooms are available on the museum’s first and second levels.


Guests are welcome to photograph and record all museum exhibits except for video presentations.


All service animals are freely admitted to the KY Coal Museum. However, pets are not permitted in the museum.
