Historic Downtown Benham Walking Tour

Downtown Benham is a trove of architectural and historical treasures. In 1909, Wisconsin Steel Corporation/International Harvester Company began building the coal town of Benham, KY for its employees and their families. Buildings were erected for local businesses, education, healthcare, entertainment, churches, and residences.

International Harvester began selling the buildings and homes in the early 1960s when the coal industry faced economic and technological changes. In 1961, the company incorporated Benham with a mayor and city council. In l984 most of Benham was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
